This one is for the suffering NHL fans out there, just waiting for some hope that the season will return. All we can do is ponder what it might look like at this point, unfortunately. One of the biggest names to consider is the New York Rangers’ newest addition, Alexis Lafreniere.
August 10th, 2020 was a celebration for Rangers fans, as the lottery gods were on their side, granting them the number one pick. While this draft was not considered particularly deep, it featured Lafreniere, a player often compared to Sidney Crosby. In fact, both were selected by the Rimouski Océanic in the QMJHL draft, and Lafreniere was the first 16-year-old since Crosby to record 42 goals.
Lafreniere, however, does not enjoy the comparison, as the 19 year old is still awaiting his debut in the NHL. He was named the QMJHL top rookie last season, as well as a first-team All-Star, and with good reason. He is an excellent skater with a powerful stride, making him fast on the ice and capable of making good decisions with the puck.
At 6’1″ and 192 lbs, he is light on his feet and a force to be reckoned with. He is a physical force, even though he is not as heavy as other players. His ability to recover from one-on-one puck battles and start up the ice again is superb for a left winger. This will serve him well in the fast-paced action he will have to get used to.
Potential Building Block
The Rangers have had a bit of an unlucky streak. Lias Anderson, another one of their young stars, demanded a trade almost as fast as he joined the team. They are hoping Alexis Lafreniere is the building block they’ve been looking for, and it looks like they may finally be right.
